- A Philadelphia police officer was shot when a gunman arrived at a large brawl between students at Overbrook High School and opened fire, officials said.
- The fights broke out around 2:42 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, outside the school along the 5800 block of Lancaster Avenue, according to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel.
- As responding police officers broke up the fight, a 30-year-old man armed with a Ruger-5.7 arrived at the scene, according to Bethel. The man fired the weapon and a bullet ricocheted off the ground, striking a 26-year-old police officer underneath his bulletproof vest, Bethel said.
- The officer – who didn’t immediately realize he had been shot – was taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital where he is undergoing surgery. Bethel said the officer is in critical condition. A law enforcement source told NBC10 the officer is expected to survive.
- Bethel said the officer has been with the department for a little over a year and was assigned to the 19th District in March.
- Bethel also said the suspect is in custody and no officer fired their weapon during the incident.
