Man killed in Sunday morning shooting in North Philly, police say

Law enforcement officials in Philadelphia are investigating after a man was shot at killed along a roadway in North Philly on Sunday morning.

According to police, officers responded to the 1100 block of West Venango Street in North Philadelphia at about 7:07 a.m. on Sunday to find Maximino Martinez who had been shot.

Martinez, officials said, was pronounced at the scene by first responders at about 7:15 a.m.

On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, Philadelphia police announced that 49-year-old Alexander Marquez was charged with murder and related counts in Martinez's death.

Marquez was held without bail. Online court records don't list an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

Entering Tuesday, at least 66 people were killed in Philadelphia in 2025, according to police data. That's down nearly 26% from the same date last year and the lowest year-to-date total since at least 2008.
